La Fondazione

With the South of Italy, for 20 Years

Fondazione con il Sud

We are a private, non-profit organization founded through an alliance between banking foundations, third sector, and volunteering sector dedicated to advancing Southern Italy’s development by strengthening social cohesion. We support initiatives that empower new generations, protect shared community assets, improve human services, promote immigrant integration, and safeguard the rights of the most vulnerable. In short, we work to make Southern Italy a place where staying, returning, or arriving is a viable choice.

We allocate financial resources to build an inclusive and thriving Southern Italy, directing our funding across four fundamental pillars.

Firstly, we place future generations at the center of our work, funding initiatives that educate young people in legality and civic responsibility, combat school dropout, nurture young talent and attract ‘brain gain’ back to the South. We reclaim community assets by supporting projects that restore historical and cultural heritage, regenerate green spaces and abandoned lands, and return assets confiscated from organized crime to community use. We allocate resources to strengthen essential human services through targeted initiatives in healthcare, sustainable mobility, social housing, and resilient community welfare systems. Finally, we promote human rights and social inclusion, support immigrant integration, and protect the rights of the most vulnerable.

Mission

Our history

Tutto ebbe inizio

Where it all began

On 22 November 2006, Fondazione per il Sud was established as an ambitious and unprecedented project, the first ever funded entirely by private capital to drive the development of Southern Italy by placing social cohesion at its core.

Napolitano a Con il Sud

A choice 'with' the South

In 2011, the Foundation changed its name to Fondazione con il Sud ('Foundation With the South') to explicitly highlight its participatory approach and its commitment to working with Southern communities. The Foundation selected the new logo through a public contest, choosing it from over 500 entries submitted by young designers, graphic artists, and students.

Non solo bandi

Beyond calls for proposals

Alongside community foundations and calls for proposals, the Foundation has continuously expanded its toolkit. Over the years, it has introduced a range of support mechanisms, from special and innovative ideas to co-financed initiatives, development programmes, and organizational capacity building.

Cambiare verso alla narrazione

Changing the narrative

As established by the Board of Directors in 2014, communication does more than just promote the Foundation's mission; it is a tool to achieve it. By dismantling stereotypes and encouraging participatory processes, we use communication to inspire and drive real change.

Con i bambini

A national commitment against educational poverty

In 2016, the social enterprise Con i bambini was created as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Foundation to implement the programmes of the Fund Against Educational Poverty in Children and Youth.

Digitalizzazione

Digitalization and data analysis

To streamline project submission, evaluation, and monitoring while improving data collection, the Foundation launched the open-source platform Chàiros in 2017 and established a dedicated data analytics strategy.

Valutare l'impatto

Evaluating impact

Starting in 2022, the Foundation introduced impact evaluation to measure and assess the changes generated by the initiatives it supports.

We oversee the entire process: from designing a call for proposals to evaluating the outcomes achieved. We support initiatives led by third-sector organizations alongside local institutional and economic partners, fostering active, cohesive, and supportive communities.
